Really? I haven’t read any, but I remember the 4C reviews saying that the build quality was unacceptably garbage for a $60k car. I kind of expected the Quadrophenia to be the same, but $10k more.

Ehh, slower around a track depends on conditions, track, and driver. Even putting that aside, the ATS isn’t a very pleasant car for the money. The interior is bland and somewhat cheap, CUE is still an enormous pain to operate, it doesn’t look particularly attractive or distinguished (subjective, I know), the armrest isn’t very comfortable, the cupholder placement is really annoying, the trunk is a bit shallow, the gauges suck, and the sightlines aren’t particularly great for a sedan. Add in the annoyingly coarse exhaust note, and it adds up to a car that’s great to drive, but not particularly excellent to live with. It’s not particularly surprising that my buddy’s dad went for a regular CTS, hold the speed bits.

And you’re trying to argue that an ATS isn’t? Between Cadillac’s persistent and often expensive electronic glitches, general lack of giving a shit in the build quality department, and rather indifferent customer service, the Alfa looks pretty damn good. Even the pre-production model I checked out felt noticeably better screwed together than the ATS-V, and since Alfa dealers are mostly chained to Maserati up here, customer service is top notch.

Except Motor Trend just did a 4 way comparison with the ATS-V, M3, C63 S, and the Alfa, and I bet you can guess which car finished last and which was first. Yeah, the Alfa was a clear first, with the ATS dead last. Now I love Cadillac, but the ATS is trash. The CTS, on the other hand, is a fabulous car.

The 4C is an oddball. It seems that the entire development of that car was spent on the carbon tub and the exhaust note. Then they decided to throw in the dashboard and such.

Fiat is dead last in initial quality. Dodge isnt much higher. Are you actually arguing FOR the build quality of a FIAT product? Are you taking crazy pills? I will admit the four-cheese is a good looking car, but I think the engine is due to fail quickly, it doesnt have a proper manual tranmission, and it is slower around a track than an ATS-V AND it’s 10k more.

I’m willing to argue for the build quality of Euro-developed FCA products. Aside from the 500L (which had an absolutely spiteful dual clutch and terrible seats), many of the Fiat products over here are actually pretty reliable. A friend’s sister just hit 90,000 miles in her early production Fiat 500 Sport, and she hasn’t had any problems or trips to the dealer outside of general maintenance. I know a couple people with early build Abarths, and they also haven’t had any problems. Even much of the more high end stuff has proven to be reliable. Maserati Ghiblis had several annoying electrical-related issues for the first model year, but have actually been pretty solid since. Here’s what my logic boils down to.
-The engine is Euro-developed, which means it will be reliable. There’s a general track record there.
-The transmission is directly from ZF, so it won’t blow up like most automatics that Chrysler touches.
-The electronics and infotainment were pretty solid when I got to check out a preproduction model. There wasn’t any real lag, everything functioned as normal, and it feels like the suppliers did a good job in general. Plus, Italian FCA electrics have been decent for a fair period of time.
Basically, everything that Chrysler typically screws up looks to be a non-issue here. Even if there are teething issues (which I don’t doubt), the excellent customer service and good warranty will help take any sting off of minor things, which is more than can be said for the Cadillac.
